Introduction
Claritin also known as Loratadine, is an antihistamine which reduces the natural chemical histamine effect in the human body and is used for curing symptoms of seasonal allergies including watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing and itching of throat and nose. It is also used for curing itching and skin hives in patients with chronic skin reactions. Claritin is a 2nd generation H1 histamine antagonist medicine used for treating allergies. Distantly, it is related to atypical antipsychotic quetiapine and structurally, it is closely related to tricyclic antidepressant medicines including imipramine. Loratadine is sold under various brand names (such as Claritin) and by Schering-Plough and Shionogi in Japan. Schering-Plough developed this medicine as a part of quest for potential blockbuster medicine: a nonsedating antihistamine. By the time, it submitted the medicine to United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for approval; the agency had already approved its rival’s terfenadine, non sedating antihistamine and, as a result, put loratadine on lower priority. Claritin was approved by FDA in the year 1993 and accounted for 28 percent of Schering's total sales.
