Introduction
Proventil is a bronchodilator, which increases airflow to lungs and relaxes muscles in the airways. It is used for preventing or treating bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease and also for preventing exercise-induced bronchospasm. Also known as Albuterol or Salbutamol, it is a β2-adrenergic receptor short-acting agonist that’s used for bronchospasm relief in situations, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Proventil is sold as Ventolin amongst other trade names and was originally marketed by Allen & Hanburys. The medicine was an instant success and has been used for curing asthma ever since. It is basically given by inhaled route for direct effect on bronchial smooth muscle and is generally achieved through nebulizer, metered dose inhaler or other proprietary delivery devices.
Doses of Proventil
  • Take Proventil exactly as recommended by your healthcare provider; you should not use in smaller or larger amounts or for longer than prescribed.
  • Take the recommended dosage and follow all patient instructions for effective and safe use. Consult your doctor about individual benefits and risks of using this medication.
  • While using the inhaler for first time, spray it in the air, away from face and shake well before using.
  • For using the inhaler, shake the canister well before every spray and open the mouthpiece. Put the mouthpiece into your mouth and close your lips, breathe in slowly while pushing down on canister. Hold your breath for around ten seconds, and then breathe out slowly.
  • Consult your doctor, if any of the asthma medicines don’t seem to work as well in preventing or curing attacks.
  • Take the missed dose once you remember; don’t double the dosage for making up the missed one.
  • Get emergency medical help, in case of overdose as symptoms might include headache, nervousness, dry mouth, tremor, uneven or rapid heart rate, heavy feeling or chest pain, nausea, pain spreading to shoulder or arm, dizziness, sweating, feeling light headed, fainting or convulsions (seizure).
  • Store this medication at room temperature away from heat and moisture as too much heat can cause the canister to burst.
