Abilify is an antipsychotic medication that works by changing actions of chemicals in the brain and is used for treating symptoms of psychotic situations including manic depression (bipolar disorder) and schizophrenia. It is also used in combination with other drugs for curing major depressive disorder in adults. It is also used for curing irritability and symptoms of mood swings, aggression, self-injury and temper tantrums related to autistic disorder in kinds under the age of 6 years. Also known as Aripiprazole, it is a partial dopamine agonist of 2nd generation group of atypical antipsychotic medicines with extra antidepressant properties which is used for curing bipolar disorder, clinical depression and schizophrenia. Abilify was approved by U.S. FDA for schizophrenia in the year 2002 and European Medicines Agency in 2004. It was developed by Otsuka in United States and Japan; however sells this medicine jointly with Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Doses of Abilify:
  • You can take Abilify as recommended by your doctor; however not in smaller or larger amounts and not for longer than prescribed.
  • Your doctor might occasionally change your dosage to ensure you get better results.
  • Don’t take this medicine for more than six weeks unless your doctor tells you to.
  • It can be taken with or without food and measure the liquid form of this medicine with a special dose measuring spoon and not with standard spoon.
  • Missed dose can be taken once you remember; however don’t take additional dose to make up the missed one.
  • Get emergency medical help, in case of overdose; symptoms include vomiting, drowsiness, aggression, agitation, tremors, confusion, seizure (convulsions), fast or slow heart rate, fainting or trouble breathing.
  • Store this medicine at room temperature away from heat and moisture; the liquid form should be stored in a refrigerator.
