Aralen Phosphate is a drug which is used for preventing or treating malaria, a disease caused by parasites. It medicine works by interfering with parasites growth in red blood cells of the body. Parasites which cause malaria usually enter the body through mosquito bite. This disease is common in areas including South America, Southern Asia and Africa. Also known as Chloroquine, Aralen Phosphate is used for treating infections caused by amoebae. It is basically a 4-aminoquinoline medicine used in the prevention or treatment of malaria and was originally discovered by Hans Andersag and coworkers at the Bayer laboratories in the year 1934. It was ignored for ten years because it was considered too toxic for human use.
Doses of Aralen :
  • You can take Aralen Phosphate as recommended by your doctor; nevertheless not in smaller or larger amounts and not for longer than prescribed.
  • At times, this medicine is given once per week.
  • For preventing malaria: Start using this drug 2 weeks before entering an area where malaria is common.
  • Take Chloroquine regularly to best prevent malaria; additionally to taking chloroquine, use insect repellents, mosquito netting and protective clothing around your bed for further preventing mosquito bites which could cause malaria.
  • You can take the missed dose as soon as you remember; don’t take additional dose to make up the missed one.
  • Get emergency medical help, in case of overdose; symptoms include drowsiness, headache, vomiting, nausea, seizure (convulsions), vision changes, weak pulse, slow heart rate, slow breathing (breathing may stop) and fainting.
  • Store Aralen Phosphate at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
