Asacol affects a substance in the body which causes tissue damage, diarrhea and inflammation and is used for curing proctitis, proctosigmoiditis and ulcerative colitis. It is also used for preventing ulcerative colitis symptoms from recurring. Also known as Mesalazine and mesalamine or 5-aminosalicylic acid, it is an anti-inflammatory drug used for curing mild-to-moderate Crohn's disease and inflammatory bowel disease. It is a bowel-specific aminosalicylate medicine, which acts locally in the gut and has its predominant actions there. Mesalazine is a derivative of salicylic acid and is also thought to be antioxidant which traps free radicals that are potentially damaging byproducts of metabolism.
Doses of Asacol :
  • You can take Asacol as recommended by your doctor; don’t take it smaller or larger amounts and not for longer than prescribed.
  • Take this medicine with glass full of water and is usually be taken with or without food.
  • Don’t break, chew or crush the Asacol tablet; swallow it whole, as the enteric-coated tablet contains a special coating for protect your stomach.
  • Missed dose can be taken as soon as you remember; you shouldn’t take additional dose for making up the missed one.
  • Get emergency medical help, in case of overdose; symptoms include dizziness, ringing in your ears, confusion, headache, sweating, drowsiness, vomiting, diarrhea and shortness of breath.
  • Store this medication at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
