Atorvastatin is in the group of medicines known as HMG CoA reductase inhibitors or statins that reduces levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing good levels of cholesterol. Sold as calcium salt under trade name Lipitor by Pfizer, Atorvastatin is a member of medicine class called statins that’s used to lower blood cholesterol. It prevents strokes via anti-inflammatory and other mechanisms and stabilizes plaque. As with all statins, it works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme found in liver tissue, which plays an important role in cholesterol production in the human body.
