Cimetidine is in the group of medicines known as histamine receptor antagonists that works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach produces. It is also used for preventing and curing different types of ulcer and for curing situations, which cause the stomach to produce too much acid. It is also used for curing gastroesophageal reflux disease, when stomach acid backs up into oesophagus and causes heartburn. Cimetidine is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist, which inhibits stomach acid production and is largely used in for treating peptic ulcers and heartburn. Cimetidine has been sold by GlaxoSmithKline under Tagamet trade name (at times Tagamet HB200 or Tagamet HB) and was approved in United Kingdom in the year 1976 and by United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 1979.
Doses of Cimetidine
  • You can take Cimetidine as prescribed by your doctor; however not for longer than recommended.
  • It is usually taken at bedtime or with meals and with glass full of water.
  • To ensure you are taking the correct dose, measure the liquid form of Cimetidine with special dose measuring cup or spoon.
  • Without informing your doctor, don’t stop using this medicine, as it might around eight weeks to cure the disease.
  • Missed dose can be taken as soon as you remember; you shouldn’t take additional dose to make the missed one.
  • Get medical help in case of overdose; symptoms include fainting, nausea, extreme weakness, vomiting, confusion or diarrhea.
  • Store this medicine at room temperature away from heat, light and moisture.
