Flagyl is an antibiotic drug that fights bacteria in the human body and is used for curing bacterial infections of respiratory tract, vagina, joints, skin and stomach. This medicine won’t treat a vaginal yeast infection. Also known as Metronidazole, Flagyl is a nitroimidazole antibiotic medication used especially for protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. It is an amebicide, antiprotozoal and antibiotic drug of choice for first episodes of mild-to-moderate Clostridium difficile disease. Sold by Pfizer in United States and internationally by Sanofi under Flagyl trade name, it is also marketed under other brand names. Flagyl was introduced in the year 1960 and is also used as a gel preparation in dermatological conditions treatment including fungating tumours (Cambridge Healthcare Supplies and Anabact) and rosacea (MetroGel and Rozex by Galderma).
Doses of Flagyl
  • Flagyl can be taken as recommended by your doctor; however not in smaller or larger amounts and not for longer than prescribed.
  • Extended release Metronidazole tablet can be taken on empty stomach, at least two hours after and 1 hour before eating a meal.
  • Don’t chew, break or crush the tablet. Swallow it whole.
  • To ensure this medicine isn’t causing harmful, your blood might need to be tested often.
  • This medicine can cause unusual results with several medical tests, so inform your doctor who treats you that you are using Metronidazole.
  • Missed dose can be taken as soon as you remember; however don’t take additional dose to make up the missed one.
  • Get medical help in case of overdose; symptoms include seizures or convulsions, nausea, tingling and numbness, dizziness, vomiting and loss of coordination or balance.
  • Store this medicine at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
