Lasix also known as Furosemide is a loop diuretic used for treating edema and congestive heart failure. It is most commonly sold under trade name Lasix by Sanofi-Aventis, and also under trade name Frumex and has also been used for preventing Standardbred and Thoroughbred race horses from bleeding through nose during races. Along with some other diuretic medicines, Lasix is included on the banned drug list of World Anti-Doping Agency because of its alleged use as masking agent for other medicines. Furosemide is mainly used for curing edema and hypertension and is the first-line agent in most patients with edema because of congestive heart failure. It is also used for renal impairment, hepatic cirrhosis, in adjunct therapy for pulmonary/cerebral edema where rapid diuresis is required, in management of severe hypercalcemia in combination with adequate rehydration and nephrotic syndrome.
Doses of Lasix
  • You can take the medication of Lasix exactly prescribed by your doctor; however not for longer than prescribed.
  • The liquid form should be measured with a special dose-measuring spoon and not with the regular spoon.
  • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, don’t take additional dose to make up the missed one.
  • Get emergency medical help, in case of overdose; symptoms include heavy sweating, dry or hot skin and thirsty feeling.
  • Store this medicine at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
