Levlen is a combination medicine, which contains female hormones which prevent ovulation. It also causes changes in uterine lining and cervical mucus, making it harder for fertilized egg to attach to uterus and harder for sperm to reach uterus. It is used as contraception for preventing pregnancy. Also known as Levonorgestrel, it is a 2nd generation synthetic progestogen and is used as an active ingredient in few hormonal contraceptives, including progestogen only pills, combined oral contraceptive pills, intrauterine systems, contraceptive implants and emergency contraceptive pills. Chemically, Levlen is a hormonally active levorotatory enantiomer of racemic mixture norgestrel and a gonane progestin derived from 19- nortestosterone.
Doses of Levlen
  • You can take Levlen as recommended by your doctor; however not in smaller or larger amounts and not for longer than prescribed.
  • You will have to take the 1st pill on first day of your period or 1st Sunday after the period starts. You might need to use backup birth control like spermicide or condoms wile first using this medicine.
  • Take just 1 pill every day; when you run out of pills start the new pack the next day and get your prescription refilled before you run out of medicine.
  • You might have breakthrough bleeding, particularly during initial three months.
  • Missing the pill might increase the risk of becoming pregnant, so if you miss 1 pill, take 2 pills on the day you remember.
  • Get emergency medical help in case of overdose; symptoms include vaginal bleeding, nausea and vomiting.
