Maxalt is a headache drug, which narrows blood vessels around the brain and reduces substances in the body that can trigger nausea, headache pain, sensitivity to sound and light and other symptoms of migraine. It is used for curing migraine headaches and will only cure a headache, which has already started. It won’t reduce the number of attacks or prevent headaches. You shouldn’t use this medicine for treating a headache, which causes loss of movement on one side of the body, a headache that seems to be different from your usual headaches or common tension headache. Also known as Rizatriptan, it is a 5-HT1 agonist triptan medicine introduced by Merck & Co. for; it is offered in 5 and 10 mg strengths as orally disintegrating tablets and tablets. This medicine was approved by United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the year 1998 and is the 2nd generation triptan. It is offered only by prescription in United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Likewise, it is classed as Prescription Only Medicine (POM) in Italy, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Israel, Spain and Croatia.
Doses of Maxalt
  • Use Maxalt exactly as recommended by your doctor; however not in small or large amounts or for longer than prescribed. Follow the directions on your prescription label as overuse of this medication can actually make your headache worse.
  • Use it once you notice symptoms of headache or after the attack has already started.
  • Take it with glass full of water. For using Maxalt orally disintegrating tablets (Maxalt-MLT):
  • You should not swallow the tablet whole.
  • Consult your healthcare provider, if you have more than 4 headaches in a month.
  • Store this medication at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
  • As this medicine is used as required, it doesn’t have a daily dosing schedule.
  • After using tablet, you need to wait for at least 2 hours before taking a 2nd tablet.
  • Get emergency medical help, in case of overdose as symptoms might include high blood pressure (blurred vision, severe headache, anxiety, buzzing in your ears, chest pain, confusion, uneven heartbeats, seizure or shortness of breath).
