Generic Name: ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate
Brand Name: Ortho-Tri-Cyclen
Ortho-Tri-Cyclen contains a combination of female hormones (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol), which prevent the release of egg from an ovary. It also causes changes in your uterine lining and cervical mucus, making it harder for fertilized egg to attach to uterus and harder for sperm to reach uterus. Ortho Tri-Cyclen is also used as contraception for preventing pregnancy. Norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol is an oral contraceptive which contains progestin and estrogen. Side effects are weakness, edema, change in weight, breakthrough bleeding, nausea, vomiting and headache. The dose is one active tablet for three weeks and an inert tablet for a week, then repeat the cycle.
Doses of Ortho-Tri-Cyclen
  • You can take Ortho-Tri-Cyclen recommended by your doctor; however not in smaller or larger amounts and not for longer than prescribed.
  • Take first pill on the first day of your period or first Sunday after your period starts.
  • Take one Ortho-Tri-Cyclen pill every day with glass full of water and with or without food.
  • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember; however don’t take additional dose to make up the missed one.
  • In case of overdose, get emergency medical help; symptoms include vomiting, vaginal bleeding and nausea.
  • Store the medication at room temperature away from extreme heat and moisture.
