Synthroid or Levothyroxine is a replacement for hormone which is normally produced by thyroid gland for regulating metabolism and energy of your body. It is given when thyroid doesn’t produce enough of hormone on its own and cures low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism). It is used for preventing or treating enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) that can be caused by radiation treatment, hormone imbalances, cancer or surgery. Synthroid shouldn’t be used for treating weight problems or obesity. It is a synthetic form of thyroid hormone thyroxine that is normally secreted by follicular cells of thyroid gland and occasionally is used for preventing recurrence of thyroid cancer.
Doses of Synthroid:
  • You can take Synthroid as recommended by your doctor; however not in smaller or larger amounts and not for longer than prescribed.
  • It can be taken with glass full of water; the tablet can dissolve very quickly and swell in throat, possibly causing gagging or choking.
  • Synthroid can be taken on an empty stomach or 30 minutes before eating.
  • To ensure this medicine isn’t causing harmful effects and is helping your condition, your blood will need to be tested often.
  • Inform your doctor who treats you that you are using Synthroid.
  • Take the missed dose once you remember; nevertheless don’t take additional dose to make up the missed one.
  • Get emergency medical help, in case of overdose; symptoms include pounding heartbeats, chest pain, shortness of breath, tremors, confusion, leg cramps, diarrhea, seizures or vomiting.
